AI and agentic systems
Chatbot
A chatbot is a program that answers questions in a conversation. It gets a query, returns an answer and waits for the next one. Modern chatbots are built on large language models; older ones followed fixed scripts.
A chatbot differs from an AI agent in that it only answers but doesn't act: it doesn't plan steps, call tools or work with company systems on its own. Over company documents, a chatbot is usually built with the RAG technique, so it answers from your data, not from the model's memory.
What it means for your business
A chatbot makes sense for repeated questions from customers or employees. Once it should handle tasks, not just answer, you need an AI agent.
