Product discovery is the analytical phase before development, in which a small team understands the problem, maps users, market and competitors, and proposes solution options.
The team is typically a product lead, a UX designer and a senior developer. The output is an analysis document, a user story map and a roadmap. The point is to throw away bad ideas before they cost money in development.
